
Overview

This course is suitable for anyone who requires training in Slinger/signalling, including those who have received no formal instruction.
The A40 Slinger/Signaller course is an ideal entry point into the lifting industry.
Course Content
Candidates will be able to:
- Know how to establish the weight and dimensions of a load and communicate this information to the crane operator
- Know how to use clear and unambiguous signals to direct the actions of a crane while it is being used to move loads of various weights and dimensions
- Know how to describe the nature of the lifting sector and the Slinger/Signaller’s role and responsibilities as a plant operator
- Be able to name and explain the purpose of differing types of lifting equipment and lifting accessories, basic construction, uses and applications, characteristics and terminology
- Know how to conform with the crane manufacturer’s requirements as per technical data, as well as other types of information sources and relevant regulations and legislation
- Interpret and extract information from all relevant documentation
- Undertake all pre-use checks on non-specialist lifting accessories and identify non-serviceable items
- Determine the serviceability of lifting accessories, and maintain and store them correctly
- Explain the procedures required to place non-serviceable items out-of-service
- Identify centres of gravity and estimate the weight of any load to be lifted
- Secure various types of load to a lifting hook using the relevant lifting accessories and procedures
- Direct and guide the movement of loads to different types of locations on site
- Accurately place loads on site
- Arrange, use and comply with all communication procedures
- Maintain safe working situations
- Carry out all out-of-service and securing procedures
Entry Requirements
Candidates must have achieved the relevant CITB Health, Safety & Environment (HS&E) touch-screen-test within 2 years.
Good understanding of spoken and written English.
Assessment
- Three (3) Days Training – classroom-based teaching and practical training
- One (1) Day – CPCS Testing Theory & Practical

Next Steps
To upgrade your card to Blue, you will need to complete the Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Controlling Lifting Operations – Slinger/Signaller and an Operatives Health, Safety and Environment Test completed within the last 2 years.
