Overview
This course will give candidates a thorough understanding of mental health and the things that can affect a persons wellbeing.
Candidates will learn the skills to spot the signs of mental illness and have the confidence to offer and signpost the right support to someone in need.
Course Content
Candidates will be able to:
- Have a solid understanding of mental health
- Identify factors that can affect wellbeing
- Recognise the signs of mental illness and depression in the workplace
- Understand the impact of mental health issues
- Carry out physical first aid procedures
- Understand the stigma and discrimination relating to mental health
- Create a supportive mental health culture at work
- Feel confident in approaching someone in distress, to calmly reassure them
- Help someone returning to work, by implementing appropriate mental health support measures
This course will cover:
- What is depression?
- Mental health and the factors that affect it
- What is an anxiety disorder?
- What’s the difference between a mental health episode, crisis and condition?
- Key attributes, roles and responsibilities of a Mental Health First Aider
- Current Legislation around mental health
It will look at a number of mental health conditions including anxiety disorders, Schizophrenia, PTSD, self-harm and eating disorders. Candidates will learn to recognise the signs of someone in distress and how to offer support.
Discussions will include how to spot the difference between a medical emergency and an imminent threat to life and candidates will be able to carry out a risk assessment and apply the correct first aid procedure.
Entry Requirements
Good understanding of spoken and written English.
Assessment
At the end of this course, candidates will need to pass the following assessments:
- Two multiple-choice question question papers
- Practical assessment (scenario based)
