← Back to Blog

Getting your CPCS Red Trained Operator Card is a big moment. You’ve been trained, you’ve passed your tests and you’ve got the card that gets you onto site. But the red card isn’t designed to last. It’s there to give you time to build experience, and once it runs out, so does your ticket to operate.

Whether you got your red card last week or it’s due to expire next month, there’s a clear route to the blue card. Here’s how it works.

Why the red card isn’t the end of the road

Your Red Trained Operator Card is valid for 2 years, and it can’t be renewed like-for-like. It shows you’ve been trained and tested, but not yet that you’re fully competent on the job.

To keep working on CPCS sites long term, you’ll need the Blue Competent Operator Card. It’s valid for 5 years, it can be renewed, and it’s the card most principal contractors expect to see.

What you’ll need to upgrade

There are three things you’ll need to move from red to blue:

A red card for the same category. It needs to be in date, or expired no more than 12 months ago if you’ve had the 12-month extension, or no more than 24 months ago if you haven’t.

The relevant NVQ for your category. This could be anything from Level 2 to Level 5, depending on your role. Most plant operators will need a Level 2 NVQ, while categories such as supervising or planning lifts need a higher level. If you’re not sure which one you need, we can tell you.

The right CITB HS&E Touchscreen Test for your role, passed within the last 2 years. Most operators will need the Operatives test, crane supervisors will need the Supervisors test, and appointed persons will need the Managers and Professionals test. If you haven’t taken yours yet, we can help you book it.

How the NVQ works

The NVQ is about proving you can do the job safely and properly in a real working environment. There are no classroom exams. Instead, you’ll build up evidence from the work you’re already doing on site, such as:

An assessor watching you work

Photos and videos of your work

Witness statements from your supervisor

Questions to check your knowledge

Because it’s built around your day-to-day work, you won’t need to take lots of time off site to complete it.

Applying for your blue card

Once you’ve achieved your NVQ, you’ll apply to CPCS for the upgrade and send copies of your qualification and unit certificates. Your blue card will then be issued for 5 years.

Already hold a blue card for another machine? The new category will simply be added to your existing card.

Running out of time?

If your red card is close to expiring and you haven’t finished your NVQ, you’ve still got options.

If you’re registered on a relevant NVQ, you can apply for a 12-month extension, either while your card is still in date or up to 12 months after it’s expired. That keeps you working on site while you finish.

If your card has already expired, it’s not necessarily the end of the road. As long as you complete your NVQ within 24 months of the expiry date, you can still upgrade to the blue card. You just won’t be able to operate on CPCS sites on the expired card in the meantime.

Leave it longer than that and things get harder. You’ll need to retake the CPCS Theory and Practical Tests to get another red card before you can carry on.

Plan your NVQ early

We’d always advise getting at least 6 months of experience on your machine before starting your NVQ. That gives you the time on site you need to build up good evidence and feel confident when your assessor comes out.

But don’t leave it too late. The most common problem we see is operators putting their NVQ off until the last few months of their red card. Get in touch with us early, and we’ll help you plan when to start. That way you’ll have plenty of time to gather your evidence, no risk of being turned away from site, and no extra cost for extensions or retests.

How we can help

We support operators and employers through the whole process, from registering on the NVQ to arranging on-site assessments and getting your upgrade sorted. If you’re an employer, we can also help you check what CITB funding is available for your team.

Got a red card that’s due to expire? Get in touch with our team and we’ll get back to you within one working day.
