Overview
This course is aimed at candidates that require the knowledge and practical skills to prepare, attach, guide and move suspended loads using a range of lifting accessories. It will enable the candidate to carry out their duties while complying with LOLER regulations.
Course Content
Candidates will be able to:
- Understand the industry, the dangers of working in the industry and their responsibilities as a Slinger Signaller
- Conform to relevant regulations, legislation and manufacturers requirements as per technical data
- Locate, identify and explain different types of lifting equipment and lifting accessories.
- Explain their basic construction, uses, applications and their functions
- Interpret and extract information on all relevant documentation
- Undertake all pre-use checks on non-specialist lifting accessories and identify non-serviceable items
- Explain procedures for placing non-serviceable items out-of-service
- Identify and explain centres of gravity and calculate estimated weights of loads
- Set up exclusion zones explaining actions required for emergency actions and identifying any overhead hazards
- Identify and maintain PPE appropriate for Slinger Signaller use
- Secure various types of loads to a hook using the relevant lifting accessories and procedures ensuring load balance, security and integrity
- Direct and guide the movement of loads to different types of location using different methods of communication
- Understand environmental considerations
- Carry out all out-of service and securing procedures
Entry Requirements
NPORS CSCS – Candidates must have achieved the relevant CITB Health, Safety & Environment (HS&E) touch-screen-test within 2 years.
Good understanding of spoken and written English.

Novice course – 2 Days
Experienced Worker Tests- 1 Day theory and practical assessment
Location
Customer Site (Training & Testing) – Site must adhere to NPORS specifications
Next Steps
NPORS Traditional Card – There are no requirements to complete an NVQ, a five year card is issued and after five years reassessment is required.
To upgrade your card to Blue, you will need to complete the Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Controlling Lifting Operations – Slinger Signaller and an Operatives Health, Safety and Environment Test completed within the last 2 years.
