This CPCS A60 course covers safe operation, pre-use checks, practical machine control, site safety, and full preparation for the CPCS assessment. Entry Requirements

• A valid CITB Health, Safety & Environment (HS&E) Test passed within the last 2 years
• A good working understanding of spoken and written English

What You Will Learn

• Operate mobile cranes safely and productively
• Respond accurately to recognised crane signals
• Position the crane correctly for lifting operations
• Alter jib lengths and understand the related safety devices
• Carry out minor adjustments, pre-use checks, and routine maintenance
• Read and understand duty charts
• Programme and use safe-load indicators
• Understand the basics of power units, transmission systems, and control systems
• Understand how radius changes affect safe working capacity
• Follow statutory regulations and relevant Codes of Practice
• Understand shock loading and how it affects structural strength, stability, and load movement
• Recognise safe slinging principles and the capacities of chains, slings, and lifting accessories
• Understand the safe use of outriggers
• Prepare the crane for transport and understand relevant public highway requirements

Assessment

• Days 1-4: Classroom-based and practical training (Foundation route)
• Day 5: CPCS Theory and Practical Test

Please note: Candidates taking the test‑only route should already have substantial, recent on‑site experience operating a crawler crane. We strongly advise gaining practical experience before attempting the CPCS tests, as the assessment requires confident, competent operation in real working conditions.

Certification

Candidates who pass both tests receive the CPCS Red Trained Operator Card for the A60 Mobile Crane category, valid for 2 years.

Progression – Upgrading to the Blue Card

To progress to the CPCS Blue Competent Operator Card, you’ll need:

• Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Plant Operations (Construction) – Cranes and Specialist Lifting
• Valid Health, Safety & Environment Touchscreen Test.

This demonstrates long-term competency and is required by many principal contractors for ongoing site access. We can advise on NVQ pathways when you’re ready.
