Description

About the Course

Starting a career in construction means understanding how to work safely from day one. The CITB Health & Safety Awareness (HSA) Course provides a practical introduction to health, safety and environmental responsibilities on site, helping learners recognise hazards and understand how to reduce the risk of accidents and injuries.

For many construction workers, this course is the first step towards obtaining a CSCS Green Labourer Card, making it one of the most widely recognised entry-level qualifications in the construction industry.

Whether you’re completely new to construction or an employer looking to ensure your workforce understands their responsibilities, this course provides the essential knowledge needed to work safely and confidently on site.

Course Details

  • Awarding Body: CITB
  • Course Name: Health & Safety Awareness (HSA)
  • Course Duration: 1 day
  • Certificate Validity: 5 years
  • Grant: Grant available for members of the CITB Employer Network
  • Delivery Method: Classroom-based or online options available
  • Location: Nationwide

Who Is This Course For?

This course is designed for individuals who are either entering the construction industry or need to demonstrate a basic understanding of health and safety on site.

It’s particularly suitable for:

  • Labourers applying for a CSCS Green Labourer Card
  • New entrants to the construction industry
  • Apprentices and trainees
  • Site operatives
  • Individuals returning to construction after time away from the industry

No previous construction experience or health and safety qualifications are required.

Entry Requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this course.

Learners should have a reasonable understanding of spoken and written English to fully participate in the training and complete the assessment.

If a learner is under 18, a written consent from a parent or guardian is required to attend.

What You Will Learn

Throughout the course, learners will develop an understanding of how health and safety affects day-to-day activities on construction sites.

Topics covered include:

  • Health and safety legislation
  • Employer and employee responsibilities
  • Hazard identification and risk awareness
  • Working safely at height
  • Manual handling operations
  • Fire prevention and emergency procedures
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  • Accident reporting
  • Occupational health and wellbeing
  • Environmental awareness in construction
  • Safe working practices on site

The course combines discussion, practical examples and real-life construction scenarios to help learners understand how the principles apply in the workplace.

How You’re Assessed

At the end of the course, learners complete a multiple-choice assessment to demonstrate their understanding of the subjects covered.

To achieve certification, candidates must:

  • Attend the full course
  • Participate in the training activities
  • Successfully pass the end-of-course assessment

The assessment is designed to confirm understanding rather than test practical skills.

Certification

Upon successful completion, candidates will receive a:

CITB Health & Safety Awareness Certificate

This qualification demonstrates a recognised understanding of health, safety and environmental awareness within the construction industry and supports progression towards a CSCS Labourer Card.

CITB Grant Information

Grant is available for this qualification if your company is a member of the CITB Employer Network. Please speak to a member of the team to discuss further.
