About the Course

The CPCS A46 category assesses a candidate’s ability to safely set up, operate, manoeuvre, maintain, and shut down a driven piling rig over 20 tonnes in accordance with legislation, manufacturer guidance, and industry best practice.

Due to the specialist nature of piling operations, this is an on‑site CPCS test. Centre‑based testing is not available for this category.

Entry Requirements

To sit the CPCS A46 test, candidates must have:

• A valid CITB Health, Safety & Environment (HS&E) Test passed within the last 2 years
• A good understanding of spoken and written English
• Access to a suitable driven piling rig (above 20 tonnes) and a safe testing area on site

What the Assessment Covers

During the CPCS A46 assessment, candidates must demonstrate their ability to:

• Identify and explain principal components, controls, and terminology
• Follow manufacturer requirements, legislation, and industry standards
• Carry out all pre‑use checks
• Assist in setting up and rigging the piling rig
• Explain the purpose and requirements of working platform certificates
• Manoeuvre safely, including in confined spaces
• Guide the rig to a specified location through restricted areas
• Identify hazards including underground and overhead services
• Configure the rig correctly for travel
• Follow communication signals and instructions
• Maintain safe working practices throughout operations
• Understand lifting requirements and limitations
• Assist in shutdown and securing procedures
• Explain de‑rigging, loading, and unloading procedures for transportation

Assessment

The CPCS A46 on‑site test includes:

• CPCS Theory Test (verbal, recorded)
• CPCS Practical Test carried out on your piling rig (driven, above 20 tonnes)

Certification

Successful candidates receive the CPCS Red Trained Operator Card for the A46 Piling Rig – Driven Above 20 Tonnes category, valid for 2 years.
