About the Course
This CPCS course covers safe operation, pre-use checks, practical machine control, site safety, and full preparation for the CPCS assessment on a 360° excavator below 10 tonnes. Compact 360° excavators are widely used on groundworks, utilities, and general construction sites where space is limited but full slewing capability is still required.

Entry Requirements
- Valid CITB Health, Safety and Environment test passed within the previous two years before course start or CPCS test date.
- Good spoken and written English. Candidates should raise any concerns before booking.
What You Will Learn
- Operate a 360° excavator safely and productively
- Fit and operate ancillary equipment
- Site the machine safely and efficiently
- Carry out minor adjustments and routine servicing
- Understand the machine’s capabilities, purposes, and limitations
- Follow all required safety precautions
- Interpret information from level pegs and profiles
- Work to levels using laser equipment
- Understand legally required routine adjustments and safety checks for lifting accessories
Assessment
- Days 1-4: Classroom-based and practical training (Foundation route)
- Day 5: CPCS Theory and Practical Test
Please note: Candidates taking the test‑only route should already have substantial, recent on‑site experience operating a crawler crane. We strongly advise gaining practical experience before attempting the CPCS tests, as the assessment requires confident, competent operation in real working conditions.
Certification
Candidates who pass both tests receive the CPCS Red Trained Operator Card for the A58A Excavator 360° Below 10 Tonnes category, valid for 2 years.
CITB Grant Funding

Progression – Upgrading to the Blue Card
To progress to the CPCS Blue Competent Operator Card, you’ll need:
- Level 2 NVQ Certificate in Plant Operations
- Valid Health, Safety & Environment Touchscreen Test.
This demonstrates long-term competency and is required by many principal contractors for ongoing site access. We can advise on NVQ pathways when you’re ready.
