About the NVQ

Occupational health and safety practitioners carry real responsibility — investigating and evaluating incidents, developing and monitoring procedures to safely control work operations, promoting a culture of health and safety, and carrying out workplace risk assessments. The Level 3 NVQ Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety gives experienced practitioners a nationally recognised way to have that competence formally assessed.

This is a generic qualification, appropriate for people working in a health and safety practitioner role across any sector — not just construction.

If you’re already doing this work, it turns your day-to-day experience into formal, recognised proof of your competence as a health and safety practitioner.

Who Is This NVQ For?

This Level 3 NVQ is built for people already working as a health and safety practitioner, in a position of responsibility for the health, safety and welfare of a team or organisation.

It’s particularly well suited to:

• Health and safety practitioners investigating and evaluating incidents and complaints
• Practitioners developing, monitoring and reviewing procedures to safely control work operations
• Practitioners promoting a culture of health and safety and carrying out workplace risk assessments
• Employers who need a formally qualified health and safety practitioner within their team

We deliver this NVQ nationwide, on your own site, working around your existing job and workload so you don’t need to travel or take time off to complete it.

Entry Requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this qualification.

Centres carry out an initial assessment of candidate skills and knowledge to identify any gaps and help plan the assessment route.

Qualification Structure

To achieve the ProQual Level 3 NVQ Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety, candidates must complete:

Mandatory Units

• Investigate and evaluate health and safety incidents and complaints in the workplace
• Ensure responsibility for actions to reduce risks to health and safety
• Develop procedures to safely control work operations
• Monitor procedures to safely control work operations
• Promote a culture of health and safety in the workplace
• Conduct a health and safety risk assessment of the workplace

Optional Units (choose one)

• Make sure actions in the workplace aim to protect the environment
• Review health and safety procedures in the workplace
• Supervise the health, safety and welfare of a learner in the workplace

This is a workplace-based NVQ, meaning your everyday work activities provide the evidence required to demonstrate competence.

Assessment methods may include:

• Assessor observations
• Professional discussions
• Witness testimonies
• Work products and site records
• Assignments and reports
• Oral and written questioning
• Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

Our assessors work around your existing responsibilities, making the process flexible and straightforward while minimising disruption to your workload.

Certification

Upon successful completion, candidates will receive:

• A ProQual certificate for the Level 3 NVQ Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety

What CSCS Card Can I Get With This NVQ?

Once you have:

• Completed this Level 3 qualification, and
• Passed the CITB Supervisors Health, Safety and Environment Test (within the last two years)
