Entry Requirements
Valid CITB Health, Safety and Environment test passed within the previous two years before course start or CPCS test date.
Good spoken and written English. Candidates should raise any concerns before booking.
Teaching and Assessment
4 days of classroom-based and practical training.
1 day of CPCS testing.
Course Aims
Provides training and testing in the safe, effective use of compact crane plant.
Suitable for candidates with limited or no compact crane operating experience.
Teaches candidates how to operate and maintain a compact crane safely.
Course Content
Understand the industry context and the operator’s responsibilities.
Identify key components, construction, controls and terminology.
Follow the operator’s handbook, information sources, regulations and legislation.
Understand relevant documentation.
Complete pre-use checks.
Configure the crane for travel and move it to the work area.
Manoeuvre safely in confined spaces.
Configure the crane for lifting duties.
Set up Rated Capacity Indicators or Load Moment Indicators.
Identify load weights and centres of gravity.
Deploy outriggers where applicable.
Understand jib extensions, their function and limitations.
Respond to hazards including underground and overhead services.
Lift and place loads through full radius, slewing or steering capabilities.
Control load swing and follow signals and instructions.
Move loads by machine travel where the endorsement allows.
Understand compatible lifting accessories and the limitations of slinging with compact cranes.
Shut down, secure, load and unload the machine safely.
Outcome
Successful candidates gain the CPCS Red Trained Operator Card, valid for two years.
Next steps
Progress to the relevant Level 2 NVQ to obtain the CPCS Blue Competent Operator Card, valid for five years.

Foundation Course: 4 Days, Tuesday to Friday, £1300 + VAT
Intermediate Course: 3 Days, Wednesday to Friday, £995 + VAT
