About the NVQ
Running a construction site at senior level means holding responsibility for programme, safety, quality and people. The Level 6 NVQ Diploma in Construction Site Management (Building and Civil Engineering) gives experienced site managers a nationally recognised way to have that responsibility formally assessed.
If you’re already doing this work, it turns your day-to-day management experience into formal, recognised proof of your competence — and opens the door to the Black Managers CSCS Card.

Who Is This NVQ For?
This Level 6 NVQ is built for people already operating at senior management level on building and civil engineering construction sites, who want that experience formally recognised.
It’s particularly well suited to:
- Site managers running building or civil engineering projects
- Contractors bidding for building and civil engineering contracts that require certified, competent site managers
- Senior supervisors progressing into a formal site management role
We deliver this NVQ nationwide, on your own site, working around your existing job and workload so you don’t need to travel or take time off to complete it.
Entry Requirements
There are no formal entry requirements for this construction site management NVQ.
All candidates complete an initial skills assessment to identify any knowledge gaps and plan the right assessment route for their role and experience.
Qualification Structure
To achieve the ProQual Level 6 NVQ Diploma in Construction Site Management – Building and Civil Engineering, candidates must complete:
Mandatory Units
- Developing and maintaining good occupational working relationships in the workplace
- Allocating work and monitoring people’s performance in the workplace
- Contributing to the identification of a work team in the workplace
- Establishing, implementing and maintaining organisational systems for managing health, safety, welfare and wellbeing in the workplace
- Establishing, controlling and monitoring environmental factors and sustainability in the workplace
- Evaluating and confirming work methods in the workplace
- Planning the preparation of the site for the project in the workplace
- Monitoring project activities in the workplace
- Ensuring that work activities and resources meet project work requirements in the workplace
- Organising, controlling and monitoring supplies of materials in the workplace
- Identifying and maintaining communication systems and organisational procedures in the workplace
- Controlling project progress against agreed quality standards in the workplace
- Controlling project progress against agreed programmes in the workplace
- Managing your personal development in the workplace
- Identifying, allocating and planning the deployment and use of plant, equipment or machinery in the workplace
- Establishing dimensional control criteria in the workplace
- Controlling project quantities and costs in the workplace
- Evaluating feedback and making recommendations in the workplace
- Managing the installation, maintenance, monitoring and removal of temporary works in the workplace
Optional Units (choose one)
- Enabling learning opportunities in the workplace
- Planning activities to traditional and heritage buildings and structures in the workplace
- Planning demolition activities in the workplace
- Planning and scheduling the maintenance activities of property, services or systems in the workplace
- Managing the project handover in the workplace
- Planning tunnelling activities in the workplace
Additional Units (not mandatory)
- Planning highways maintenance and repair activities in the workplace
- Providing customer services in the construction workplace
- Supervising activities to traditional and heritage buildings and structures in the workplace
- Supervising tunnelling activities in the workplace
- Planning the installation of retrofit works in the workplace
- Managing installation, commissioning and handover of retrofit works in the workplace
How You’re Assessed
This is a workplace-based NVQ, meaning your everyday work becomes the evidence. Assessment methods include:
- Assessor observations
- Professional discussions
- Witness testimonies
- Work products and job records
- Assignments or reports
- Knowledge questions
- Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
Certification
Upon successful completion, candidates will receive:
- A ProQual certificate for Level 6 in Construction Site Management – Building and Civil Engineering
CITB Grant Funding
CITB-registered employers may be eligible to claim a £600 Short Qualification Grant upon successful completion of this NVQ.

What CSCS Card Can I Get With This NVQ?
Once you have:
- Completed this Level 6 qualification, and
- Passed the CITB Managers Health, Safety & Environment Test (Minimum Requirement)
…you can apply for the Black Managers CSCS Card — widely recognised across the construction industry as proof of your competence in a management role.
