About the Course

This course prepares you to operate and maintain a crawler crane safely, in line with CPCS standards. Whether you’re new to crane operation or you’ve been working without formal certification, you’ll leave with the practical competence and the official Red Card that employers across the UK require.

Training combines classroom theory with hands-on operation of a real crawler crane, giving you the confidence to pass both the CPCS theory and practical tests.

Entry Requirements

• A valid CITB Health, Safety & Environment (HS&E) Test passed within the last 2 years
• A good working understanding of spoken and written English

What You Will Learn

• Identify and explain the function of principal components, controls, and terminology
• Understand manufacturer requirements, legislation, and operator handbook guidance
• Carry out all pre‑use checks
• Configure and prepare a crawler crane for travel
• Travel the crane safely to the work area
• Manoeuvre in confined spaces
• Configure the crane for lifting operations
• Understand rigging and de‑rigging procedures for lattice‑type extensions
• Identify hazards including underground and overhead services
• Programme and set up Rated Capacity Indicators (RCIs)
• Lift loads using full radius and slewing capabilities
• Accurately place loads and minimise load swing
• Change falls of rope on a hook block
• Move loads through machine travel while following signals and instructions
• Maintain safe working practices at all times
• Prepare the crane for movement after lifting duties
• Carry out shutdown and securing procedures
• Understand loading and unloading procedures for transportation

Assessment

• Days 1-4: Classroom theory and practical training on a crawler crane
• Day 5: CPCS Theory and Practical Test

Please note: Candidates taking the test‑only route should already have substantial, recent on‑site experience operating a crawler crane. We strongly advise gaining practical experience before attempting the CPCS tests, as the assessment requires confident, competent operation in real working conditions.

Certification

Candidates who pass both tests receive the CPCS Red Trained Operator Card for the A02 Crawler Crane category, valid for 2 years.

Progression – Upgrading to the Blue Card

To progress to the CPCS Blue Competent Operator Card, you’ll need to complete the Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Plant Operations – Cranes and Specialist Lifting and hold a valid HS&E Test. This demonstrates long-term competency and is required by many principal contractors for ongoing site access. We can advise on NVQ pathways when you’re ready.
