Entry Requirements
Valid CITB Health, Safety & Environment (HS&E) Test within the last 2 years
Good understanding of spoken and written English
What You Will Learn
Establish load weight, dimensions and communicate this to the crane operator
Use clear, unambiguous hand and radio signals
Understand the lifting sector and the Slinger/Signaller’s responsibilities
Identify different types of lifting equipment and accessories
Understand regulations, legislation and manufacturer requirements
Interpret lifting plans, technical data and documentation
Carry out pre‑use checks on lifting accessories
Identify non‑serviceable items and remove them from use
Determine centres of gravity and estimate load weights
Secure loads using correct lifting accessories and methods
Direct and guide loads safely to various locations
Accurately place loads on site
Maintain safe working areas and communication procedures
Carry out out‑of‑service and securing procedures
Assessment
Three (3) days of classroom-based and practical training
One (1) day of CPCS theory and practical testing
Please note: Candidates taking the test‑only route should already have substantial, recent on‑site experience working as a slinger signaller. We strongly advise gaining practical experience before attempting the CPCS tests, as the assessment requires confident, competent operation in real working conditions.
Certification
Successful candidates will receive the CPCS Red Trained Operator Card, valid for 2 years.

Progression – Upgrade to Blue
To upgrade to the CPCS Blue Card, candidates must complete the Level 2 NVQ in Controlling Lifting Operations – Slinger/Signaller and hold a valid HS&E Test.
