Keeping plant and machinery running safely and reliably takes real technical skill — servicing, diagnosing faults, replacing components and getting equipment back into operation without downtime. The Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Construction Plant or Machinery Maintenance gives experienced plant fitters and maintenance technicians a nationally recognised way to have that competence formally assessed.

Who Is This NVQ For?

This Level 2 NVQ is built for people already working as plant or machinery maintenance technicians, who want that experience formally recognised.

It’s particularly well suited to:

• Plant fitters servicing, repairing and diagnosing faults on construction plant and machinery
• Maintenance technicians removing, replacing and dismantling plant components
• Contractors and plant hire companies bidding for contracts that require certified, competent technicians

We deliver this NVQ nationwide, on your own site, working around your existing job and workload so you don’t need to travel or take time off to complete it.

Entry Requirements

There are no formal entry requirements to start this machinery maintenance NVQ.

All candidates complete an initial skills assessment to identify any knowledge gaps and plan the right assessment route for their role and experience.

Qualification Structure

To achieve the ProQual Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Construction Plant or Machinery Maintenance (Construction), candidates must complete:

Mandatory Units

• Conforming to General Health, Safety and Welfare in the Workplace
• Conforming to Productive Working Practices in the Workplace
• Moving, Handling and Storing Resources in the Workplace
• Operating Plant or Machinery for Non-Operational Activities in the Workplace
• Servicing Plant or Machinery in the Workplace
• Removing and Replacing Plant or Machinery Components to Restore Operational Use in the Workplace
• Dismantling and Assembling Plant or Machinery Components to Replace Worn, Damaged or Faulty Parts in the Workplace
• Inspecting Plant or Machinery for Operational Serviceability in the Workplace
• Diagnosing Faults in Plant or Machinery Systems or Components in the Workplace

Optional Units (complete two)

• Installing, Repairing or Modifying Construction Resources by Heating, Welding, Brazing, Soldering and Thermal Cutting in the Workplace
• Producing One-off Components to Restore or Maintain the Operational Functions or Plant or Machinery in the Workplace
• Installing Plant or Machinery for Operational Activities in the Workplace
• Carrying Out Specific Tests on Plant or Machinery to Determine Operational Serviceability in the Workplace
• Configuring Plant or Machinery for Specific Operational Activities in the Workplace
• Handing Over Plant or Machinery to the Control of Others in the Workplace

How You’re Assessed

This is a workplace-based NVQ, meaning your everyday work activities provide the evidence required to demonstrate competence.

Assessment methods may include:

• Assessor observations
• Professional discussions
• Witness testimonies
• Work products and site records
• Assignments and reports
• Oral and written questioning
• Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

Our assessors work around your existing responsibilities, making the process flexible and straightforward while minimising disruption to your workload.

Certification

Upon successful completion, candidates will receive:

• A ProQual certificate for Level 2 in Construction Plant or Machinery Maintenance

CITB Grant Funding

CITB-registered employers may be eligible to claim a £600 Short Qualification Grant upon successful completion of this NVQ.
