About the NVQ
Construction site supervisors are responsible for coordinating teams, maintaining standards, managing resources and ensuring work is completed safely and efficiently on site. The Level 4 NVQ Diploma in Construction Site Supervision (Construction) – Building and Civil Engineering provides experienced supervisors with a nationally recognised qualification that formally recognises their workplace competence.
If you’re already working in a supervisory role within building and civil engineering, this NVQ gives you recognised proof of your skills and experience and provides a route to the Gold Supervisory CSCS Card.

Entry Requirements
There are no formal entry requirements for this qualification.
All candidates complete an initial skills assessment to identify any knowledge gaps and ensure the qualification is suitable for their role and experience.
Qualification Structure
To achieve the ProQual Level 4 NVQ Diploma in Construction Site Supervision – Building and Civil Engineering, candidates must complete:
Mandatory Units
- Developing and maintaining good occupational working relationships in the workplace
- Implementing, maintaining and reviewing systems for health, safety, welfare, wellbeing and environmental protection in the workplace
- Assessing and agreeing work methods in the workplace
- Planning work activities and resources to meet project requirements in the workplace
- Coordinating work control in the workplace
- Controlling work progress against agreed programmes in the workplace
- Allocating and monitoring the use of plant, equipment or machinery in the workplace
- Implementing communication systems for the project in the workplace
- Controlling work against agreed quality standards in the workplace
- Contributing to the control of work quantities and costs in the workplace
- Maintaining supplies of materials to meet project requirements in the workplace
- Maintaining the dimensional accuracy of work in the workplace
- Coordinating preparation for site operations in the workplace
- Supervising the installation, maintenance, monitoring and removal of temporary works in the workplace
Optional Units (choose one)
- Supervising the pre-installation planning for retrofit works in the workplace
- Supervising the installation, commissioning and handover of retrofit works in the workplace
- Allocating work and monitoring people’s performance in the workplace
- Enabling learning opportunities in the workplace
- Contributing to the identification of a work team in the workplace
- Supervising activities to traditional and heritage buildings and structures in the workplace
- Managing your personal development in the workplace

- Planning highways maintenance and repair activities in the workplace
- Supervising highways maintenance or repair activities in the workplace
- Handing over property in the workplace
- Providing customer services in the construction workplace
- Planning activities to traditional and heritage buildings and structures in the workplace
- Planning demolition activities in the workplace
- Supervising demolition activities in the workplace
- Supervising tunnelling activities in the workplace
How You’re Assessed
This is a workplace-based NVQ, meaning your everyday work activities provide the evidence required to demonstrate competence.
Assessment methods may include:
- Assessor observations
- Professional discussions
- Witness testimonies
- Work products and site records
- Assignments and reports
- Oral and written questioning
- Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
Our assessors work around your existing responsibilities, making the process flexible and straightforward while minimising disruption to your workload.
Certification
Upon successful completion, candidates will receive:
- A ProQual certificate for the Level 4 NVQ Diploma in Construction Site Supervision (Construction) – Building and Civil Engineering
CITB Grant Funding
CITB-registered employers may be eligible to claim a £600 Short Qualification Grant upon successful completion of this NVQ.

What CSCS Card Can I Get With This NVQ?
Once you have:
- Completed this Level 4 NVQ, and
- Passed the CITB Supervisors Health, Safety & Environment Test (minimum requirement)
