About the Course

The CPCS A74 Piling Rig Attendant category assesses a candidate’s ability to safely support piling operations, guide rig movements, assist with setup and shutdown procedures, and maintain safe working practices around piling rigs.

Because of the specialist nature of this equipment, CPCS requires the test to be completed on a live site. We do not offer centre‑based testing for this category.

Entry Requirements

To sit the CPCS A74 test, candidates must have:

• A valid CITB Health, Safety & Environment (HS&E) Test passed within the last 2 years
• A good understanding of spoken and written English
• Access to a suitable working area and piling equipment for training/testing

What the Assessment Covers

During the CPCS A74 assessment, candidates must demonstrate their ability to:

• Identify and explain principal components of piling rigs and associated equipment
• Understand piling terminology and sector‑specific language
• Carry out pre‑use checks on rigs and ancillary equipment
• Support rigging and setup procedures
• Understand Working Platform Certificates
• Manoeuvre and guide piling rigs, including in confined spaces
• Recognise hazards including underground and overhead services
• Configure rigs for travel
• Follow communication procedures, signals, and instructions
• Maintain safe working environments
• Understand lifting requirements and limitations
• Assist with shutdown, securing, de‑rigging, loading, and unloading procedures

Assessment

The CPCS A74 assessment includes:

• CPCS Theory Test (verbal, recorded)
• CPCS Practical Test carried out on your site

Your site and equipment must meet CPCS testing requirements. We will guide you through what is needed.

Please note: Candidates taking the test‑only route should already have substantial, recent on‑site experience working alongside a competent piling rig operator. We strongly advise gaining practical experience before attempting the CPCS tests, as the assessment requires a confident working knowledge of piling operations, signalling, rig movements, and safe working practices.

Certification

Successful candidates receive the CPCS Red Trained Operator Card for the A74 Piling Rig Attendant category, valid for 2 years.

CITB Grant Funding

CITB‑registered employers may be eligible to claim grant funding for this category. Our team can confirm current grant rates and assist with the application process.

Progression – Upgrading to the Blue Card

To upgrade to the CPCS Blue Competent Operator Card, candidates must complete:

• Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Piling Operations – Piling Operative
• A valid HS&E Test
