Description

About the Course

Where a crane can’t reach, loads are lifted and moved into place by hand-operated equipment such as chain blocks, lever hoists and pull-lifts, rigged from certified strong points. Moving a load in stages from one lifting point to the next like this is known as fleeting. Every rigging and fleeting job needs a competent lift planner to calculate the loads, choose the equipment and write a lift plan the team can follow safely. The NPORS N046 Rigging and Fleeting Loads – Lift Planner course gives you the training, testing and recognised card you need to plan rigging and fleeting operations safely and legally.

Whether you’re stepping into a rigging lift planning role for the first time or you’re an experienced planner who needs to renew, we have a route for you. You can choose a full 2-day novice course or a 1-day refresher course.

Key Course Information

  • Accreditation: NPORS
  • Duration:
    • Novice Course: 2 days
    • Refresher Course: 1 day, with proof of previous certification
  • Card Validity:
    • NPORS Traditional: 5 years
  • Location: Nationwide

Who Is This Course For?

This course is built for anyone who plans, or needs to plan, rigging and fleeting operations in construction, building services, engineering, manufacturing, power generation or industrial maintenance. It’s particularly well suited to:

  • Experienced riggers and rigging supervisors stepping up into a planning role
  • Engineers, supervisors and managers who are responsible for rigging and fleeting operations
  • Experienced lift planners who need a recognised card for site or workplace compliance
  • Employers who need a competent rigging lift planner to meet LOLER, client or insurer requirements

Entry Requirements

  • A good working understanding of spoken and written English

What You Will Learn

The course covers everything from load calculations and risk assessments to writing the lift plan pack and overseeing the team, so you can plan rigging and fleeting operations confidently from start to finish. By the end, you’ll be able to:

  • Understand the risks of the industry and your role and responsibilities as a rigging and fleeting lift planner
  • Use manufacturer handbooks and guidelines, and understand PUWER, LOLER, Working at Height, Manual Handling, risk assessment and the relevant British and international standards
  • Calculate load weights, centres of gravity, angles and tensions, and make sure they’re within the manufacturer’s limits
  • Prepare risk assessments for basic, intermediate and complex rigging and fleeting operations
  • Check the certification for lifting equipment and accessories, and understand the tools, access equipment and PPE used in the industry
  • Select the lifting equipment, materials and hand tools for the lift plan
  • Write a step-by-step method statement covering the pick-up point, travel route and laydown area
  • Allocate roles and responsibilities to riggers, supervisors and fixed appliance operators for basic, intermediate and complex tasks
  • Add sketches, scaled drawings or photos to lift plans so the team understands the location and system of work
  • Oversee complex rigging and fleeting operations and make sure the team follows the method statement
  • Liaise with management, supervisors and the workforce through meetings, toolbox talks, permit-to-work meetings and site visits
  • Lead a debrief with the lift team and discuss lessons learned

How You’re Assessed

Novice route (2 days): Day 1 covers classroom-based training in planning rigging and fleeting operations, including load calculations and producing lift plans and RAMS. On day 2, you’ll sit the NPORS theory and practical tests. With a maximum of 6 candidates per instructor, there’s plenty of time to work through real lift planning scenarios.

Refresher route (1 day): This route is for lift planners who already hold a valid or recently expired N046 card. It refreshes your knowledge of current legislation and lift planning before you sit the NPORS tests.

What Card Will I Get?

Pass both tests and you’ll receive:

  • NPORS Traditional Card: valid for 5 years. No HS&E touchscreen test needed.

This card covers the N046 Rigging and Fleeting Loads – Lift Planner category.

Renewing Your Card

  • Traditional Card: no NVQ is required. After 5 years, you’ll retake the test to renew or submit a renewal form to NPORS.
