Land drilling is precise, safety-critical work — securing the drilling area, running the rig, and drilling and completing holes to the specified programme. The Level 2 Diploma in Land Drilling Operations (Land Driller) gives experienced drillers a nationally recognised way to have that competence formally assessed.

If you’re already doing this work, it turns your day-to-day site experience into formal, recognised proof of your competence — and supports your application for a Blue Skilled Worker CSCS Card.

Who Is This NVQ For?

This Level 2 NVQ is built for people already working as land drillers, who want that experience formally recognised.

It’s particularly well suited to:

• Land drillers running and completing drilling programmes on site
• Operatives responsible for securing and maintaining the drilling area and surrounding environment
• Contractors bidding for contracts that require certified, competent drillers

We deliver this NVQ nationwide, on your own site, working around your existing job and workload so you don’t need to travel or take time off to complete it.

Entry Requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this qualification.

All candidates complete an initial skills assessment to identify any knowledge gaps and plan the right assessment route for their role and experience.

Qualification Structure

To achieve the ProQual Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Land Drilling Operations – Land Driller, candidates must complete:

Mandatory Units

• Conforming to General Health, Safety and Welfare in the Workplace
• Conforming to Productive Working Practices in the Workplace
• Contributing to the Specified Drilling Programme in the Workplace
• Establishing Work Area Protection and Safety in the Workplace
• Providing for and Maintaining the Security of the Work and Environment Surrounding the Drilling Area in the Workplace
• Drilling and Completing Holes to the Drilling Specification Programme in the Workplace

Optional Units (choose one)

• Reinstating Ground Condition in the Workplace
• Carrying Out Checks and/or Basic Maintenance on Plant or Machinery in the Workplace
• Preparing and Operating Specialised Powered Tools and Equipment in the Workplace
• Setting Out Secondary Dimensional Work Control in the Workplace
• Slinging and Signalling the Movement of Loads (Secondary Role) in the Workplace

How You’re Assessed

This is a workplace-based NVQ, meaning your everyday work activities provide the evidence required to demonstrate competence.

Assessment methods may include:

• Assessor observations
• Professional discussions
• Witness testimonies
• Work products and site records
• Assignments and reports
• Oral and written questioning
• Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

Our assessors work around your existing responsibilities, making the process flexible and straightforward while minimising disruption to your workload.

Certification

Upon successful completion, candidates will receive:

• A ProQual certificate for Level 2 in Land Drilling Operations – Lead Driller

CITB Grant Funding

CITB-registered employers may be eligible to claim a £600 Short Qualification Grant upon successful completion of this NVQ.
