About the NVQ

Plant and machinery maintenance is precise, technical work — diagnosing faults, carrying out servicing, determining whether to repair or replace components, and testing plant and machinery to confirm it’s safe and serviceable to return to work. The Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Construction Plant or Machinery Maintenance gives experienced fitters and technicians a nationally recognised way to have that competence formally assessed.

Who Is This NVQ For?

This Level 3 NVQ is built for people already working in plant or machinery maintenance, who want that experience formally recognised.

It’s particularly well suited to:

• Fitters and technicians diagnosing faults in plant or machinery systems and components
• Fitters carrying out servicing to maintain plant or machinery, and determining whether to repair or replace parts
• Technicians installing plant or machinery ready for operational use
• Fitters carrying out specific tests to confirm plant or machinery is operationally serviceable
• Contractors bidding for contracts that require certified, competent plant maintenance technicians

We deliver this NVQ nationwide, on your own site, working around your existing job and workload so you don’t need to travel or take time off to complete it.

Entry Requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this construction NVQ.

Centres carry out an initial assessment of candidate skills and knowledge to identify any gaps and help plan the assessment route.

Qualification Structure

To achieve the ProQual Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Construction Plant or Machinery Maintenance, candidates must complete:

Mandatory Units

• Confirming work activities and resources for an occupational work area in the workplace
• Developing and maintaining good occupational working relationships in the workplace
• Confirming the occupational method of work in the workplace
• Operating plant or machinery for non-operational activities in the workplace
• Diagnosing faults in plant or machinery systems or components in the workplace
• Determining and completing service to maintain plant or machinery in the workplace
• Determining and advising on the viability of repair or replacement for returning plant or machinery to service in the workplace

Optional Units (choose three)

• Inspecting plant or machinery for operational serviceability in the workplace
• Handing over plant or machinery to the control of others in the workplace
• Providing technical information, advice and guidance to users of plant or machinery in the workplace
• Installing, repairing or modifying construction resources by heating, welding, brazing, soldering and thermal cutting in the workplace
• Producing one-off components to restore or maintain the operational functions of plant or machinery in the workplace
• Installing plant or machinery for operational activities in the workplace
• Carrying out specific tests on plant or machinery to determine operational serviceability in the workplace
• Configuring plant or machinery for specific operational activities in the workplace

This is a workplace-based NVQ, meaning your everyday work activities provide the evidence required to demonstrate competence.

Assessment methods may include:

• Assessor observations
• Professional discussions
• Witness testimonies
• Work products and site records
• Assignments and reports
• Oral and written questioning
• Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

Our assessors work around your existing responsibilities, making the process flexible and straightforward while minimising disruption to your workload.

Certification

Upon successful completion, candidates will receive:

• A ProQual certificate for Level 3 in Construction Plant or Machinery Maintenance (Construction)

CITB Grant Funding

CITB-registered employers may be eligible to claim a £600 Short Qualification Grant upon successful completion of this NVQ.
