This CPCS A23 skid steer training course prepares you to operate a skid steer loader safely and efficiently, covering pre-use checks, material extraction, manoeuvring, and site safety, with full preparation for the CPCS theory and practical tests. Skid steers are widely used across groundworks, landscaping, and general construction for their compact size and manoeuvrability in confined spaces — making this one of the most practical operator tickets for site-based roles.

Entry Requirements

• Valid CITB Health, Safety & Environment (HS&E) Test within the last 2 years
• Good understanding of spoken and written English

What You Will Learn

• Identify main components, controls, and terminology
• Follow operator handbook guidance, regulations, and legislation
• Complete all pre-use checks
• Configure the machine for site travel
• Travel safely over rough, inclined, and level ground
• Manoeuvre in confined spaces
• Configure the machine for extraction and loading duties
• Respond to hazards including underground and overhead services
• Extract materials from stockpiles and other sources
• Form stockpiles and temporary ramps
• Sort and place materials into vehicles and hoppers
• Backfill, spread, and level materials
• Shut down and secure the machine correctly
• Understand loading and unloading procedures for transport

Assessment

• Two (2) days of  classroom-based and practical training
• One (1) day of CPCS theory and practical testing

Please note: Candidates taking the test‑only route should already have substantial, recent on‑site experience operating a skid steer loader. We strongly advise gaining practical experience before attempting the CPCS tests, as the assessment requires confident, competent operation in real working conditions.

Certification

Candidates who pass both tests receive the CPCS Red Trained Operator Card for the A23 Skid Steer Loader category, valid for 2 years.

Progression – Upgrade to Blue Card

To progress to the CPCS Blue Competent Operator Card, you’ll need:

• Level 2 NVQ Certificate in Plant Operations
• Valid Health, Safety & Environment Touchscreen Test

This demonstrates long-term competency and is required by many principal contractors for ongoing site access. We can advise on NVQ pathways when you’re ready.
