What is CPCS?

The Construction Plant Competence Scheme (CPCS) is the UK’s leading certification scheme for plant operators and related roles in the construction industry. Managed by NOCN Job Cards, it has spent over 30 years helping employers identify workers who have the verified skills and knowledge to operate plant machinery competently and safely on site.

A CPCS card is recognised by principal contractors, site managers, and clients across the UK. Without one, many operatives will find themselves unable to access site — particularly on larger projects where card checks are routine

Stage 1

Red Trained Operator Card

Awarded when you pass both the CPCS Theory Test and the Practical Test. You must also hold a valid CITB Health, Safety & Environment Test, completed within the last 2 years.

The Red Card shows you’ve been trained and tested to a recognised standard. It’s your entry point into the scheme.

Stage 2

Blue Competent Operator Card

Awarded when you complete the relevant NVQ qualification and hold a valid CITB HS&E Test. The Blue Card demonstrates long-term, proven competency in your plant category.

Many principal contractors require the Blue Card for ongoing site access, particularly on major infrastructure and civil engineering projects.

How to get your CPCS card — step by step

Pass your CITB Health, Safety & Environment Test

This must be completed within 2 years of your CPCS test date. It covers general site safety and is a mandatory prerequisite for all CPCS categories.

Complete your training course

Attend a CPCS-approved training course for your chosen plant category. Training combines classroom theory with practical operation, preparing you for the formal tests.

Pass the CPCS Theory and Practical Tests

The theory test is a verbal or written assessment covering your knowledge of the plant category. The practical test assesses your ability to operate the machine safely and competently in real working conditions.

Receive your Red Trained Operator Card

On passing both tests, your Red Card is issued. It’s valid for 2 years, giving you time to gain on-site experience and work towards your NVQ.

Complete your NVQ and upgrade to Blue

Once you’ve built up sufficient on-site experience, you can complete the relevant NVQ qualification to upgrade to the Blue Competent Operator Card — the standard most employers expect for long-term roles.

Renewing your Blue Card

Blue Cards must be renewed every 5 years. To renew, you’ll need to:

Complete your logbook, evidencing continued practice in your category
Complete the required online CPD renewal modules
Pass the relevant CITB Health, Safety & Environment Test (within the last 2 years)
Hold a valid NVQ qualification in your category

We recommend starting the renewal process at least 3 months before your card expires to avoid any gaps in site access.

Frequently Asked Questions

My Red Card has expired — what do I do?

An expired Red Card can’t simply be renewed, but you may have more options than you think. If you’re registered for the relevant NVQ, you may be eligible for a 12-month extension — something we can arrange on your behalf. If an extension isn’t possible, you’ll need to resit the CPCS theory and practical tests to be issued a new card. Contact our team to discuss your situation and we’ll point you in the right direction.

Can training be delivered at our own site?

Yes. We can deliver on-site training for most CPCS categories, subject to the venue meeting CPCS specifications (appropriate plant, adequate space, and safety provisions). On-site delivery is often the most cost-effective option for groups of three or more candidates. Get in touch to discuss your requirements.

What happens if I fail the theory or practical test?

For most categories, you must pass the theory test before moving on to the practical — so if you don’t pass the theory, that comes first. If you pass the theory but not the practical, you can resit the practical on its own. The only exception is Appointed Person, where the two tests can be taken independently. Resit fees apply and our team will talk you through next steps.

What’s the difference between CPCS and CSCS?

CSCS (Construction Skills Certification Scheme) covers a broad range of construction roles and trades. CPCS is specifically for plant operators and is the recognised standard for anyone operating machinery on site. Some operatives hold both — a CSCS card for general site access and a CPCS card for their plant category.

Do I need a CPCS card to work on a construction site?

It’s not a legal requirement in itself, but most principal contractors and site managers require operatives to hold a valid CPCS card before they can access site. Without one, you’ll find your opportunities on UK construction projects significantly limited.

Can I fund the course myself, or does it have to go through my employer?

Either works. Many candidates self-fund their training, particularly if they’re between employers or working towards their first CPCS card. We offer flexible payment options for individuals — contact our team to discuss what’s available.

What should I bring on the day of training?

You’ll need photographic ID (driving licence or passport), appropriate PPE for site (safety boots, hi-vis vest, hard hat), and your CITB HS&E Test pass certificate. Full joining instructions, including the venue address and any specific requirements, are sent to you on booking.

How long does it take to receive my card after passing?

CPCS cards are typically issued within a few weeks of your test results being confirmed. We’ll keep you updated throughout the process and let you know as soon as your card is on its way.

Can I hold more than one CPCS category?

Yes — many experienced operatives hold cards across multiple plant categories. Each category requires its own theory and practical test, but the CITB HS&E Test is shared across all of them provided it’s still within its 2-year validity.

Is there an age requirement for CPCS training?

You must be at least 16 years old to undertake CPCS training and testing. Some plant categories have higher minimum age requirements — our team can confirm the requirements for your chosen category.
